What does a trip to Japan actually cost?
CalcJapan works out the numbers behind the big Japan travel decisions — starting with the one that catches almost everyone: whether the nationwide JR Pass still pays for itself. Every price on this site is checked against an official or operator source, dated, and cited at the foot of the page. No invented figures, no "roughly" where a fare table exists.

JR Pass Break-Even Calculator
Add the long-distance rides you actually plan to take. The calculator totals the real reserved-seat fares and holds them up against the current 7-, 14- and 21-day pass prices — official online and overseas agency — and tells you which side of the line you land on, and by how much.

Is the JR Pass Worth It in 2026?
The full working: who should still buy the nationwide pass after the October 2026 two-price change, who should skip it, three real itineraries priced both ways, and the regional passes that quietly beat it.
How to read our numbers. Fares are adult, one-way, regular-season, reserved-seat prices unless a page says otherwise. Reserved-seat fares move a little with the season (¥200–400), and every figure carries a "checked on" date. If a price has changed since we checked, the official source we cite is the one to trust.
