Japan Trip Budget Calculator

What does the whole trip cost — not the flight, not the shopping, just the days themselves? Pick how you sleep, how you eat and how you get around Tokyo, and this worksheet prices every line from published rates: beds and meals as honest ranges, trains and tickets at their official prices. The base case is Tokyo; the airport run is Narita.

Prices checked 8 November 2026 · Lodging and food shown as ranges · The typical-visitor comparison is the Japan Tourism Agency's 2025 survey

Working…

What this worksheet leaves out, on purpose. Shopping — the average visitor spends 27% of their whole budget on it, and it is the one line nobody can price for you. International flights. And intercity travel: a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip costs more than several nights of hotel, so if you are leaving Tokyo, price it separately with the JR Pass Calculator. Peak seasons (cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, New Year) push lodging well above the ranges below. Flying into Haneda instead of Narita? The transfer is shorter and usually cheaper — every airport figure here is Narita.

The prices behind the calculator

Tokyo lodging per night. Dorm and capsule are per bed/pod; hotels are per room. Business-hotel range is the cheapest-available band for central Tokyo on ordinary weeknights — guidebooks quote ¥7,000–12,000, but a dated snapshot of real listings (cheapest APA in Shinjuku, an ordinary December Tuesday) found nothing under ¥11,550. How the calculator adds up: lodging and food are totalled at the low, middle and high of their ranges and the trip total is shown as that range; transport, airport, attraction and connectivity lines use fixed official prices, so they are the same at both ends. The Subway Ticket line prices the cheapest ladder of 24/48/72-hour passes that covers the trip. The eSIM line uses the Airalo 10 GB plan that covers the trip length at the planning rate of ¥160 = $1, and the pocket Wi-Fi line uses NINJA WiFi's 3 GB/day list rate — the dedicated calculator prices both properly.
