About
About CalcJapan
CalcJapan is an independent publisher based in Japan. We build the calculators and price tables we wished existed when a trip to Japan turns on a number: whether a rail pass pays for itself, what staying connected really costs, what a day on the ground adds up to.
How we work
Primary sources first. Every fare, pass price and fee on this site is taken from the operator that charges it — a JR company's published fare table, an official pass page, a carrier's rate sheet — or from a named secondary source that itself cites one. Each page lists its sources and the date they were checked.
No invented numbers. If we cannot verify a figure, it does not go in a table. Estimates are labelled as estimates, and worked examples show their arithmetic so you can check them.
Dated, and corrected. Japan's travel prices have moved repeatedly in 2026 alone — a two-tier JR Pass price from October, JR East fare revisions in March. Pages carry a "last updated" date; when a reader spots a stale figure, we re-check against the source and fix it.
Verdicts are the arithmetic's, not a sponsor's. Our calculators compare the same numbers whether or not a booking link exists, and our guides say "skip it" whenever the sums say so. How the site earns money is set out on the disclosure page.
What CalcJapan is not
We are not a travel agency, and we are not affiliated with the JR Group, JR East, JR Central, JR West, or any carrier, platform or tourism board named on this site. We do not sell tickets; booking links lead to the operators and agencies listed in our disclosure. Prices here are a planning aid — the fare you are charged is the one on the operator's own page at the moment you pay.
The short version
Travel advice is full of adjectives. We prefer a fare table, a date, and a sum you can redo yourself.
