How this site earns money
Affiliate links
Some links on CalcJapan are affiliate links. If you click one and buy — a rail pass from an agency such as Klook or KKday, an eSIM, a hotel night — the seller may pay CalcJapan a commission. The price you pay is the same as going to the seller directly; the commission comes out of the seller's marketing budget, not your pocket.
Affiliate links are marked in our page code with rel="sponsored", and each page that contains them says so. Links to official operator sites (for example the JAPAN RAIL PASS official reservation site) are editorial: we link to them because they are the cheapest or authoritative channel, whether or not any arrangement exists.
What commissions never change
Calculator results, fare tables and buy/skip verdicts are computed from published prices and are identical for every reader. We do not rank a product higher because it pays more, we do not soften a "not worth it" verdict because the product has an affiliate programme, and several of our clearest recommendations — starting with "buy the JR Pass on the official site, not through an agency" — point at the option that earns this site the least.
Prices change
Every price on this site carries a "checked on" date and a source. Fares, pass prices and exchange rates move — in 2026 alone the JR Pass gained a second, agency-only price tier and JR East revised its fares in March. Treat our figures as a dated snapshot for planning: the operator's own page at the moment you pay is the price that applies. Where a page on this site and an official source disagree, believe the official source and, if you have a moment, tell us so we can correct the page.
Corrections
When we find or are told about a wrong figure, we re-check it against the primary source, fix the page, and update its "last updated" date. We do not silently change a verdict.
Independence
CalcJapan is independently operated from Japan. It has no affiliation with the JR Group, JR East, JR Central, JR West, Klook, KKday or any other company named on this site, and no company reviews or approves our content before publication. Product and company names are used only to identify the fares and services being discussed.
